I watched a great Four Corners episode last week about the jobs of the future. It was a scintillating watch for me because business and people are my things. It was interesting to ponder how the global employment landscape has changed over the years and to discover our education system in Australia is not adequately preparing our young ones for the challenges that lie ahead of them.
"Robots" or intelligent programs are doing more and more things and filling roles that we didn't expect. We can see they have made their place as our check out assistants but robots are even replacing lawyers in divorce disputes. It's crazy stuff.
So what can we do to stay in front? How can I help best prepare my children for the "workscape" they will land smack in the middle of in 15 years?
Well, I can become a knowledge sponge and be more flexible in my thinking, more nimble in my abilities. We are living in a more mobile, more flexible workscape. We are working more part time jobs and we are more transient workers so I can continue to learn and grow to stay relevant.
It doesn't matter which generation we are a part of, everyone can look to improve themselves and become more knowledgeable and better equipped to create a fulfilling life. We can be much more progressive in the lessons we teach at home. We can up-skill ourselves in the area of technology rather than stick our heads in the sand.
