DIY marketing in 5 simple steps for businesses on a budget.
There is so much to consider today when thinking about how to market a business. I often get the question “where do I start?”. Well, here it is. Start by getting through each of these 5 simple steps and you are well on your way to mastering your own business marketing.
Know your business and your brand
If you don’t have a clear idea of who your business is, everything little action you take with marketing will be harder. I know becuase I’ve been there. When I’ve felt less than confident about my brand and what it stands for, everything has taken longer and the result has been inaction. When it comes to marketing a small business there’s SO MUCH TO COVER that it’s important to make sure that our time spent on marketing results in action rather than indecision.Set a clear sense of direction
Make sure you have clear direction and goals for your business. Then, make sure everyone is aware of these and on board and that you are consciously moving towards them together. A business without goals and vision is like a ship without a captain.Know what you’re selling and what you’re saying
Usually small businesses have more than one product or service. Consider yours and figure out which of these you want to sell more of. Think about profit margins, Then carefully plan what you’re going to communicate and talk about for the year ahead. Keep it somewhere close by so for future communications and digital content you can take a quick peek, decide on your message, create your content and keep on moving.Choose your DIY marketing weapons and master them
Marketing is a minefield now. There’s so much to consider and think about. Prioritise your marketing activities. Consider your resources and available time first. It’s always better to do one thing well than frantically try to keep up with “everything”. Your past clients are your best advocates. So start with them and consider your current audiences.Upskill where you can and then get help for the rest
Every business has their own limited skills and resources. Assess what you have available, including how solid your internal creative skills are and your available time. Then upskill where you can. There are plenty of online training courses and YouTube clips now to help get you started. Then be realistic about your gaps and get help from someone else where you need it. It might be that a friend could help you out or you could get in touch with us and get some training in specific areas that can help you move through the harder parts. We will always point you in the right direction if we can’t help you out but we’re yet to meet with a client we couldn’t help yet.
